The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,342,220 in 1970 to 5,520,517 in 2010. That was an increase of 135.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 13.4 percent to 28.2 percent.
The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 7.4 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Immigration (NIM) was the principal factor in population increase while NDM was negative in all periods.
The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM remained the primary source of added population in all periods and the sole source in the most recent period.
